7. Contract description

The purpose of this project is to develop the international competitiveness of a group of exporting companies and workshops in the furniture sector in Damietta.  The project should build on existing initiatives of the IMC to create linkages amongst companies that will enable them to exploit international marketing opportunities through cooperation, and work with this network of companies to raise the profile of Damietta as a source of quality reproduction furniture.  The project will develop an internationalization strategy for the network of companies, support the implementation of such a strategy over an 18 month period, and provide technical assistance in a range of areas, potentially including design, sourcing of raw materials and accessories, market development, production optimization, etc.  The project will conclude with a forward strategy developed in collaboration with the network, covering 2-3 years following the end of the contract, and should put in place suitable mechanisms to enable the network of companies to continue implementation.

This project should be designed to build on a series of initiatives that have been/will be implemented by the Industrial Modernisation Centre during 2003 and the first half of 2004 to create a “Hand Made in Domiat” brand by providing international marketing and production related technical assistance.  Given the characteristics of the target region, the international contractor should not only have significant experience in the sector and sound knowledge of the European and eventually Middle Eastern markets for reproduction furniture, but should also have practical experience in fostering the development of clusters.
